Supporting Road Safety Week with Brain Injury Group

4th December 2018

Road Safety Week – delivered by the charity Brake - took place 19-25th November and this year the theme was Bike Smart. Over a third of people killed or injured on UK roads are those travelling by bicycle or motorbike* which is a figure campaigners aim to drastically reduce.

At Your Legal Friend we were keen to get involved with Road Safety Week and support the Bike Smart campaign. We partnered with Brain Injury Group to deliver the Road Safety Week message into a local school.

We invited the children at St Paul and St Timothy’s Catholic Infant School in Liverpool to design their very own cycle helmet for the chance to win a book voucher.

Sara Stanger, Principal Lawyer and Department Manager from Your Legal Friend presented the prizes to the winners during a school assembly.

Sara said “this is a great way to educate children on the importance of wearing a helmet when they are riding their bikes.  The children had fun creating their designs and really took on board how a helmet can help prevent a serious injury.”

The aim of Road Safety Week 2018 and Bike Smart was to focus on:

  • Policy makers being Bike Smart by implementing a safe systems approach, mandating lifesaving technology and prioritising cycle friendly infrastructure.
  • Drivers being Bike Smart by looking out for those on two wheels, driving safely and slowly and giving bike riders plenty of space.
  • Cyclists and motorcyclists being Bike Smart through safe riding behaviours and appropriate training and equipment.

Sara said “At Your Legal Friend we often represent cyclists and motorcyclists who have suffered a serious brain injury through a road traffic accident.  We are pleased to support Road Safety Week to help raise awareness and help prevent injuries where possible in the future”.
