In addition to occupational asthma, there are other respiratory illnesses that could be caused by work. You may be diagnosed with:
Allergic Alveolitis is commonly known as Farmer’s Lung. It is not a common condition, with only 43 cases recorded over the last 10 years. It is caused by inhaling organic material, such as dust or spores from mouldy hay, grain and straw. This causes flu-like symptoms but in serious cases it can lead to long term effects on lung function. If you work with these materials and have these symptoms, you may need to seek medical and legal advice.
Read moreAllergic Rhinitis is the inflammation of the mucous membrane of the nasal airways caused by an allergic reaction to workplace substances. Symptoms can appear like hay fever, but it has not been a common illness in recent years. A confirmed diagnosis may mean that legal advice may be necessary.
Byssinosis is an illness related to exposure to cotton dust in textile industries. It is now rare due to the decline in the textile industry, but if you do have symptoms as a result of working in the industry over recent years, please contact us for advice.
Silicosis is a condition caused by exposure to silica found principally in rocks and stone. If you have worked in quarrying or foundries, or if you have worked in stonemasonry, your employer should protect you from inhaling the dust. The condition causes severe shortness of breath and fibrosis (scarring of lung tissue) and may lead to lung cancer in the longer term.
If you have been diagnosed with any of these respiratory illnesses, and you think your employment is to blame, please call us now.
